Hair Adventures: Undoing 5 Years of Damage

Changing up your hair style or color can get addicting quick. I've been so many colors. Everything from black to turquoise...and until a week ago, I hadn't seen my natural hair color in approx 5 years.

Just a sample of what I've put my poor hair through...

The damage was done, and my hair was in bad shape. I had bleached my hair to the point that it was pure white at one point, and then put various natural and unnatural colors on top of it when I got tired of the maintenance. I was lucky that my hair did not suffer too much root breakage, but it felt and looked like straw at the ends, and went from thick and strong, to weak and elastic (not good, not good). I didn't take proper care of it for a long time, and honestly, I'm surprised I have any hair left.

Before: Frizzy, stringy, brassy and extremely dry. Not a good look.

My hair desperately needed a LOT of love. So, I made the tough decision last week to dye my hair back to my natural color, cut a good chunk off of the ends (ended up being 8 inches), and give it a break for an entire year. There is already a noticeable difference, just from getting a decent cut. I will be trimming it as often as possible and using deep conditioning treatments/leave in conditioners, but will not touch the color.

After: New hair! A little darker than my natural color, to allow for the fading that will happen over the next few washes :)

Hair Care Routine

Currently using the following products:

  • Paul Mitchell Strength (full set)
  • Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioning
  • Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum

It's all about strengthening and conditioning!

Things to avoid when dealing with damaged/unhealthy hair:

  • Excess or direct sunlight (dries out your hair and makes it brittle)
  • Styling tools such as a flat or curling iron and blow dryer (use tools sparingly and always use heat protection)
  • Washing your hair too often (it strips your hair of natural oils)

If anyone else is going through a similar process, feel free to give suggestions in the comments, or talk about your previous experiences and results!

  1. I made ombré on my hair a few months ago, and I know it's not a full dye experience, but I did had to take care of it as well.
Then I had a hair loss period, where I completely avoided conditioner, because I was told it was a silly way to lose more hair. If due to your multiple times of dyes your hair is falling as well, or even a little weaker, I recommend you to not brush it when it's too wet or way too dry. Wait a little until it's only somehow, wet.
    I hope this helps!
By the way, I love your new hair color! It suits you really well! xx

It all started with me sewing at an early age, making doll clothing and the basic pillow-type things like most beginners. Soon enough, my hobby exploded into intricate Halloween costume projects, handmade clothing articles and accessories that I added to my day to day ensemble. At age 18, I decided to pursue fashion as a career, and went to college to obtain a degree in fashion/theatrical costume design.

I was lucky enough to start working in the fashion and costuming industry straight out of school…and here I am today, perpetually striving towards making my dreams a reality.
